Students will now use reusable dishware instead of disposable plates, bowls, and utensils, a development triggered by the installation of a new dishwashing station near the main entrance of the Cohen Dining Commons. The new system had been scheduled to go into effect last January but was pushed back with the delay of the installation of the dishwashing equipment, Director of Facilities and Security John Yeager said.

The new facility aims to reduce trash output, Yeager said. The school cafeteria generated about 50 bags of garbage per day last year, according to Yeager. Yeager estimates that this amount will be decreased to 20 bags with the new dishwasher, resulting in a 60% cutback. “The dishwashing station is part of the general initiative to go green, as the new system will cut down on waste products and eliminate all paper and plastic utensils,” he said.   ...continue reading
