Each department is responsible for setting appropriate requirements for the AP courses that it offers. All AP courses require departmental approval. Students who wish to apply for AP courses should discuss their current work with the appropriate teachers and department chair. Students in all advanced placement courses are required to take the Advanced Placement Examination.
These are the requirements for admission to AP courses:
AP Music Theory
Admission to AP Music Theory requires excellent work in previous music theory courses or other demonstration of preparedness and an interview with the Chair of the Arts Department
AP History of Art
Admission requires demonstrated good writing skills, achievement and interest in history, and approval of the department
AP Studio Art
Admission requires enrollment in an Honors level studio art class
AP Computer Science
Admission requires Introduction to Computer Science, Topics in Computer Science I or II, and departmental approval.
AP English
The department offers one section of Advanced Placement each year. Admission is competitive, and requires grades in English which average closer to an A- than to a B+, if not higher, as well as the permission of the department. Applicants are also required to provide a writing sample. The roster for this class is chosen in the third trimester, so a timely application is necessary.
Foreign Advanced Placement courses in French, German, Latin and Spanish are continuations
Language of honors courses in earlier levels. Students who maintain outstanding records in these honors
courses are eligible to apply for Advanced Placement at the end of their third or fourth year. Admission to AP courses is by departmental approval.
AP Psychology
Admission requires a B+ or better in Introduction to Psychology, an average of B+ or better in major courses, and permission of the department.
Admission to Advanced Placement History courses is competitive and requires B+ or better in
previous history and English courses and permission of the department. Admission to Advanced Placement Economics is competitive and requires B+ or better in previous history and mathematics courses and permission of the department.
AP Calculus AB
Admission to AP Calculus AB requires a minimum grade of B+ in Precalculus AB and permission of the department.
AP Calculus BC
Admission to AP Calculus BC requires satisfactory completion of Precalculus Honors BC and permission of the department.
AP Statistics
Admission requires completion of precalculus and permission of the department.
AP Biology
Admission requires an average of B+ or better in Biology, Chemistry and Physics and permission of the department. Particularly outstanding and interested students may enroll in Physics or Honors Physics and AP Biology concurrently.
AP Chemistry
Admission requires an average of B+ or better in Biology, Chemistry and Physics and permission of the department. Particularly outstanding and interested students may enroll in Physics or Honors Physics and AP Chemistry concurrently.
AP Environmental Science
Admission requires an average of B+ or better in Biology, Chemistry and Physics and permission of the department. Particularly outstanding and interested students may enroll in Physics or Honors Physics and AP Environmental Science concurrently.
AP Physics
Admission requires an average of B+ or better in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Precalculus AB or Precalculus BC and permission of the department. Students are also required to maintain simultaneous enrollment in Calculus AB or Calculus BC.
