Parents Association Membership and Bylaw Information

Membership

From the time a student enrolls in Horace Mann School, his/her parents and/or guardians are members of the PA.  We hope that each family will find some way to participate in the various activities of the PA.  Membership dues are listed as a separate item on the tuition bill and are used to support the activities of the PA.

The Horace Mann Parents Association strongly believes in the active participation of its members.  We encourage and welcome families to volunteer for committees, as well as other positions.  There is an important place for every parent or guardian who wants to be involved.  Those who participate invariably find that their time spent, no matter how limited, is of mutual benefit.

Purpose

The purpose of the Parents Association is to support the cooperative efforts of the students, the administration, the faculty and the parents.  Through its fundraising efforts, the PA generates revenue that benefits the scholarship fund, teacher enrichment and other special programs at the school.

Organization

The business of the PA is under the direction of the PA Executive Board which is composed of the Executive Board officers, the officers of the Nursery, Lower and Middle/Upper Division Boards, past Presidents of the PA, the Trustee Liaison, the chairs of the Executive Board Committees, and several Members-at-Large who are appointed by the PA President.  This Board and the Committee Chairs implement the activities of the PA in a variety of ways that influence the life of the Horace Mann School.

 The officers of the Nursery, Lower, and Middle/Upper Divisions preside over their own division’s board and appoint the chairs of their committees with the assistance of the PA President.  They act as the liaison between the administrators and their committees and the entire school community.

The Board of each school division meets a minimum of two times per year and a maximum of four times per school year.  Notice of regular meetings is mailed in advance to all members of the Association.  Dates and times of meetings appear in the official school calendar.

Activities

The Executive Board is responsible for:

• The Bulletin, a periodic newsletter produced in conjunction with the school administration
• The HM School Calendar and Directory (produced through a combination of effort between Faculty, Administration and the PA).
• The Annual Benefit
• The organizing of standing committees for school activities including Art and Theater Department projects and productions, multicultural events, internships and jobs programs.

 

The Middle Division and  Upper Division PA activities include: Book Fair of Used Books, Textbook Recycling; City Bus and Subway Pass Organization, Library and Computer Lab Supervision, Tips on Trips, Orientation Day.

 

The Lower Division PA activities include: Book Club, Community Service, Homecoming, Carnival; Halloween Wonder Walk; Ice Skating Party.

 

The Nursery Division PA activities include: Book Fair, Carnival; Community Service; Guest Speakers; HM Outfitting; Plates and Bowls; Yearbook.

 

All PA Boards send representatives to the Parents League and Parents in Action.  Each division organizes a Parent Mentor Program to support parents new to Horace Mann.
