Nursery Division News
The Community Service Committee ran a very successful Book Drive benefiting the Children's Storefront School in Harlem and the Reach Out and Read Program at Bellevue Hospital. The next drive will be held in conjunction with the drives of the Lower Division to support Caring in Action Day. The Committee also held a Toy Drive, a Coat Drive, and a Coin Drive. Toys were given to Iris House and Bellevue Hospital, the coats went to New York Cares, and coins went to Penny Harvest. Since the Book Drive, Patricia Zuroski and Kathy Egmont, Children's Storefront Head of School, have met and exchanged ideas. The teachers also met, and the kindergarten students are about to begin a pen-pal exchange. A small group of children, parents and teachers from both schools will participate in a community service project to be held at the Children's Museum of Manhattan in February. Starting in November, the four-year-olds have visited Senior Health Partners, a comprehensive day facility for senior citizens. Together, the children and the seniors do art projects and moderate exercises with instruction both in English and Spanish. The children have experienced the feeling of making others happy. The Community Service Committee continues to work on one of the many issues of diversity: ableism. They are currently acquiring books for the Nursery Division library on the topic of ableism, while continuing the focus on other areas of diversity. Next, we can anticipate the Baby Buggy Drive, 2/20-3/6, where we collect baby equipment for homeless and needy women, and the Food Drive, which will take place 3/31-4/11.
