HoMMUNC offers high school Model United Nations delegates an opportunity to participate in high-quality, structured debate on a wide variety of international issues. The conference has always been a remarkable success; last year's attendance was over 450 delegates, which makes HoMMUNC the largest single-day High School Model UN Conference on the East Coast.
The conference will take place at Horace Mann's campus in Riverdale, New York, on Sunday, October 26th. This year's HoMMUNC will simulate nine bodies that are part of or closely related to the United Nations: the Security Council; the Historical Security Council; the Disarmament and Security Committee; the Special Political and Decolonization Committee; the Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee; the Commission on Human Rights; the World Health Organization; the World Trade Organization; and the United Nations Legal Committee. In addition, HoMMUNC 2008 will also offer a simulated crisis committee of the Council of the European Union.
Delegates will receive extensive preparation packets and pointers to additional resources. Although HoMMUNC in general does not require delegates to write position papers, each participant is expected to do further research prior to the conference. The fee for the conference is $80 per delegation and $35 per individual delegate. Please complete the registration form and mail it no later than September 16th once the deadline has passed you should contact a Secretary-General if you still wish to register. Country assignments will be given out on a first-come first-served basis. The sooner your form and payment are in to us, the sooner you will have your assignments.
HoMMUNC is an excellent opportunity for experienced and novice delegates alike to participate in formal debate. The conference also allows students to work collaboratively, learn about international affairs and current events, and improve their speaking, debating, and writing skills. Please mark October 25th, 2008 on your calendar. Feel free to contact any of us if you have any questions or concerns. We are looking forward to HoMMUNC XXIII, and hope to see you there.
