This site was created as a part of the third annual Book Day celebration at HoraceMann.
History of Book Day
Each year a committee of faculty and students selects a book for the school to read. A day in early spring or late winter is designated Book Day. On this day all classes are canceled and students and faculty follow a special schedule of assemblies and presentations designed around the major themes of the book. Assemblies and presentations are created collaboratively by students and faculty members. Many faculty members incorporate the book into their regular classes in order for students to be prepared for Book Day.
This site was created by three sections of the introductory programming class at HoraceMann. This course, Program Design, is offered to all students in 9th through 12th grade, although the majority of the students are in 9th grade. For most of the students this was their first experience creating a web page. Pairs of students were given a topic related to the era when the book, In Pharaoh's Army, was written. The information in the categories below is the result of the students' research on the Internet. More information about the students themselves can be found on their personal web pages.
We hope this site will help you to appreciate Book Day and to learn about an important part of American and World History during the 1960's and 1970's.
