Images of Vietnam-the war and the country:
is reported by Michael Weissberg and Patricia Hernandez

Our research topic is about physical images taken from Vietnam surrounding
the period of the Vietnam War. The links to the images we found include photographs
and paintings. The images depict American soldiers, landscape, and Vietnamese people
previous and during the war. We learned the way the Vietnamese people were before
the war which helps us understand better how they were effected by the war. The
images also help give us an idea about what life was like for the soldiers living in war.
The first link deals with paintings that reflect the Vietnamese culture before the war.
The second link deals with scenes that reflect the culture's history before and during
the war and as a result of the war. The thrid site has to do with watercolor images of
soldiar life. The last link is a scrap book of an American soldiar.

Links and Summeries mentioned above:
  • http://tbwa.volcano.org./vietnam/art.html: This site deals with all types of art and crafts in Vietnam before the war. It gives an enlightening view of the culture and the people. The images are very strong and are probably very important to the history of Vietnamese. Apart from representations of times and people in Vietnam there is also a section dedicated to oral tradition. I chose this site because I found it to be very important in the understanding of Vietnam, since it was and is, a very diverse and artistically capable country. {I personally recommend you looking at the picture under chuacau.jpg} This also gives links to more topics relating to Vietnam before and after the war.
  • http://tbwa.volcano.org/vietnam/history.html : This site shows images of past and modern Vietnam. It deals mostly with important elements in Vietnam before the war and directly after the war. It shows many scenes in which Vietnam warriors are shown. In order to understand the impacts of the war and the United States on Vietnam we first need to know their past history and the affects of outside countries. The site has one main picture of a Vietnamese warrior and then many links to images important in Vietnamese history. At the end of this page there are links connecting to other topics dealing with Vietnam.
  • http://members.aol.com/jimm844224/vietart1.html: This site has a selection of water color paintings by combat artist Jim Pollock. During the Vietnam War he made sketches of life for the American troops stationed in Vietnam. The site ranges from having scenes that depict action sequences in the heat of battle (ex. such as fighting from a bunker) to showing how the soldiers would unwind and relax during less tense periods of time (ex. there is a wonderfully life like painting that depicts the troops playing poker). When Jim Pollock was relieved from duty, he spent two weeks along with other combat artists finishing his paintings in Hawaii. I picked this site because even before you are told the inner meaning of the subject through the title, one can admire the talent involved .
  • http://www.ionet.net/~uheller/photos.html: This site is the actual photo album of an American soldier stationed in a Vietnamese farming town. The photos are part of a site that is about a soldier's life in Vietnam. The photos go over a wide variety of subject. These subjects include: A self portrait of the soldier in the farming town background, The soldier with his fellow soldiers, some of the farming community, and landscape photographs. These photographs are very educational to what Vietnam was like during the war from a first person point of view. Unlike the paintings in the site above, which may seem a little vague, these photos are very clear in image and quality. The photographs fill in the questions that the paintings may leave behind, which make these two sites together a good combination.
