Vietnam is largely known today for the war, but the country has a long
history beginning with the early kingdoms of Funan in the first century and
Champa in the second century. During Funan's history it was hardly influenced by
the Chinese. Over a course of 1600 years of Champa's history, China ruled over
them. While Funan didn't suffer Chinese domination, it did remain a small naval
merchant nation, and fell in the sixth century. Champa fell apart as a nation in
1720 when another Vietnamese army attacked it and drove it into present-day
Cambodia.
