On Tuesday January 15th, at 10 a.m., the University of Wisconsin will be in the college office.
A VERY Important Memo:
- 1) As I call colleges I am finding that, in increasing numbers, students have not informed us that they were not applying to schools we thought they were, because they gave us school reports. So, we have already been embarrassed when we have called colleges to speak on a student’s behalf, and the college has told us that they do not have an application.
- 2) Far more serious is that in some cases the colleges in question were of the "safer" category. If you have not told us of an application withdrawal or of a decision not to apply, please let us know as soon as possible. It is the only way that we can help you protect yourself.
- 3) Once, again: If you have given us a school report for college to which you will NOT be applying, you MUST, MUST, in writing, let Ms. Billies or Ms. Dowling know about it. This is for YOUR benefit, as we have discussed repeatedly in previous mailings, meetings, and memos on this site.
- 4) The University of Wisconsin: Applications must be ON THEIR DESK by February 1st. If you are applying you must get your application to us ASAP. Bringing it on January 31st is a very bad idea. Any application brought in before January 31st will be sent via FedEx to Wisconsin and will make the deadline. But, handing in your application in January 31st and after means that you are taking a big big risk.
- 5) It has come to my attention that there are students who are applying for regular decision who have withdrawn applications, or have not actually applied, and have not informed their college counselor and Ms. Billies or Ms. Dowling of the withdrawal. This could make things more difficult for you. We may think that you are in a more secure position than you actually are, if the applications you have withdrawn are to the "safer schools". You must inform your counselor and Ms. Billies or Ms. Dowling about any withdrawals ASAP.
- 6) Regarding the "safer schools": they are only "safer" if you have visited them, and preferably had interviews if offered. We have been talking to you about this since last April. If you have not visited the "safer schools", you must let us know ASAP. Schools a great distance away and large public institutions generally do not take campus visits into account when making admissions decisions. If it is an economic hardship for any student to make visits, that will also be taken into account.
- 7) The college counseling office is still examining seniors' college lists and preferences to best determine students' chances. Students applying for financial aid should still strongly consider applying to public colleges in their states of residence if they have not already done so and if deadlines have not already passed.
- 8) Second trimester grades could be important for some seniors. All seniors are advised to do everything they can to keep their grades up. We will send second trimester grades for any student who does well. We can not guarantee that the colleges will use those in making a decision. Many colleges however do call us for second trimester grades. Students who do not do well second trimester may therefore be put in a vulnerable position.
- 9) If you have not checked in with your advisor regarding clear indicators of your "safer schools" you should do so immediately. This office has stated publicly that it reserves the right to contact students at any time if it is felt that the student should consider an application to another school. The college advisors, across the board, have noticed that an unusually large number of students have not checked in and have not been timely about handing in secondary schools reports, WHICH IS THE ONLY WAY you indicate to us that you are serious about applying.
- 10) If in fact you have given us a school report for a college to which you WILL NOT be applying you should let us know immediately. There are very important reasons for this: if the school(s) to which you are not applying can be considered "safer", we will think that you are in better shape than you actually are. That limits our ability to help you, and puts you at some risk. Also, if we assume you are applying to a college, we will call that college on your behalf and it can be quite embarrassing for us to support your application when it has not been sent.
