| The Horace Mann stagecrew is a group of approximately 25 students who create the settings for each of the Horace Mann Theatre Company's four mainstage plays, as well as for various independent theatrical productions. "Techies" construct and paint scenery; hang, focus, and gel lights; collect and build props; and assemble costumes for each production. The crew works after school twice a week with occasional sessions on weekends.
The crew is led by two student technical directors (TD's) as well as several assistant technical directors. During an average after-school session students are broken into groups and assigned to various projects. While most techies will be assigned to projects involving carpentry, others may be working on lighting, sound, props, costumes, or general maintenance of the backstage area. The TD's attempt to rotate job assignments so that techies are able to explore all the different areas of technical theatre. During the week of a performance the stage crew takes on a new function. At this point the sets are all built and the lighting nearly completed and techies shift from creating the setting to running the show. Jobs during this week are called "show jobs" and are assigned to specific people based on interest and/or previous experience. Some jobs, such as stage manager, sound operator, master electrician, and master of props, require extensive preparation before show week, but most show jobs are simply week-long assignments. Anyone in grades 9-12 with an interest in technical theatre may join stagecrew. Interested students should speak to one of the TD's (see below) or a member of the theatre faculty.
HMTC productions are designed entirely by students. Each production has a student set designer and a student lighting designer, both of whom are chosen by the director, who is usually a faculty member. Any student who has taken Theatre Production and Design, a major course which meets 4 times a week, is eligible to be a designer. While it is not necessary for designers to be on stage crew, some tech experience is helpful. Interested students should speak to a member of the theatre faculty.
