Performing Arts
The Horace Mann School has a rich tradition of performing arts. Students participate in the theater in the roles of both actors and stagecrew. The theatre department puts on four major productions each year, including one Middle School production. Foreign language productions (in 1996, Moliere's Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme was performed by students in its original French), as an optional part of language classes, are not uncommon. As a part of a student project or just on their own, students often direct and/or star in their own productions; in the fall of 1995, two juniors directed Much Ado About Nothing, and in April and May, 1997 a junior directed The Lover, a senior directed scenes from The Bald Soprano (in its original French), and another senior directed a play of her own that she had written as an Independent Study Project that year. In the 1999-2000 school year, Into the Woods was performed.

Students may also perform in the Horace Mann Glee Club (including its Girls Ensemble, Boys Ensemble, and Chamber Chorus), Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, and Concert Band. The groups often perform all across the country. The Glee Club has performed at the Jefferson Music Festival in Washington, D.C., and everywhere from the Czech Republic to San Francisco, and are planning a concert tour in Brazil for June, 1998. The Concert Band has performed at and won awards in band contests, including one in Boston and the Orlando Heritage Music Festival. The Orchestra, along with the Glee Club, has played at churches all over New York City, and have even played concerts at Disney World!
