Bernstein and the NY Philharmonic

Bernstein with member of the NY Philharmonic after his debut concert, November 14, 1943

The New York Philharmonic was founded in 1842. The Philharmonic has played a leading role in American musical life, and has maintained a tradition of musical excellence ever since being founded. After brief appearances as a conductor and pianist in New York in 1942-3, Bernstein was invited by Rodzinski to act as assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic. On the 14th of November 1943, Bernstein was called on to conduct the orchestra, replacing Bruno Walter at short notice. The concert was widely publicized and it launched Bernstein's conducting career in the USA and abroad. When he finished , the surprised and delighted audience gave him a standing ovation. Bernstein became famous overnight! Bernstein returned to the New York Philharmonic in 1957 as co-conductor with D. Mitropoulos. In the following year he was appointed musical director and chief conductor, holding these posts until 1969. Bernstein returned throughout his career to conduct and record with the Philharmonic.
