Diversity at Horace Mann

Welcome...

According to the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), diversity is defined by "otherness". Most obviously it is determined by race, gender, and culture. On a more subtle level it includes class, sexual orientation, religion, age, and disabilities. Any and all efforts made on behalf of diversity stem from a school wide commitment to the importance of benefiting from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.

"Education leads us out from who we are and what we think we know to wider, more interesting terrain. To challenge our own points of view and experiences with those of others - that's how we learn", states Dr. Eileen Mullady, Head of School.

Our goal at Horace Mann is to move beyond tolerance, to foster in the community a respect and welcome of difference in the midst of learning - to enrich students' lives with a diverse student and faculty body, as well as curriculum that is representative of the world in which we live. The road to diversifying has nothing to do with affirmative action and everything to do with getting a variety of the best and brightest. Our first ever diversity brochure will be going out to all prospective families as it is our belief that diversity is everyone's concern and is in everyone's best interest. Diversity and the ideals that we are trying to instill belong to the entire community.

Across all divisions diversity has taken an integral part in the Horace Mann community. More than just visually but in assemblies, curriculum and discussions with parents, students, and alums alike the Office of Diversity and the Horace Mann administration is dedicated to honoring the HM mission statement, "Horace Mann School seeks a diverse student body and fosters a respect for individual and cultural differences. Each student is encouraged to strive for self-esteem and confidence and to be respectful of othersÖ..".

We are exceedingly optimistic about fulfilling our mission and invite you to join us in our efforts.
